Job creation: A governance issue? (2014-03-31)

By Terrance M. Booysen

Clearly this subject is a matter of grave concern for many South Africans, and a number of negative spin offs occur when people are left unemployed and cannot find decent employment.
Whilst many South African people may believe the issue of job creation -- or unemployment -- is unique to South Africa, in truth this is not the case and it is generally a worldwide phenomenon.

The discussion to resolve this dilemma has gripped the world’s attention.  It has been described as a catastrophe of note by politicians from Africa to America, from France to Italy, the Euro Zone, including many international business forums.  Even Julius Malema has joined the ranks of these constituencies and all of them have been left scratching their heads.

Understandably, the WEF (World Economic Forum) meetings the South African Ministers attended in Davos, Switzerland in January this year (22nd) – including amongst others Rob Davies, Trevor Manuel, Yunus Carrim, Ebrahim Patel and Pravin Gordhan – their attendance was of critical importance to try and convince the world that South Africa is a safe destination for foreign investment which is key to creating jobs, and especially for the youth in our country.
