Noah (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity)

The challenge we face

NOAHSouth Africa is currently facing a challenge on a scale never before encountered by any nation. The HIV/AIDS pandemic will leave more than 3 million children orphaned by 2015. This is a daunting number and South Africa needs a strategy to combat this epidemic of orphans.

Noah has developed such a strategy. Through training, capacity building and effective development we are building stronger communities capable of caring and providing for children orphaned by AIDS. Noah was founded in 2002 and as a result of the effectiveness of our strategy we have grown from a single Ark in the KZN midlands to stretching across 101 communities in 3 provinces providing support and opportunities to almost 25,000 children.

NOAH’S vision

Empowering communities to care for their vulnerable children.

NOAH’S mission

To empower communities with the knowledge, skills, strategies and self-confidence to form and successfully run their own community based organisations supporting the well being of vulnerable children.

Who is NOAH?

Noah is at its heart a community based organisation and our beneficiaries are intricately involved in planning, roll-out and development of all projects. Noah assists in mobilizing a committee of community leaders and a group of dedicated volunteers to focus on the children. In addition Noah brings in partners from outside the community to provide direct services to children. This functioning web of community support is an Ark. Each Ark is started as a community owned initiative to which Noah is invited to be a partner. Noah then provides training, support, mentoring and funding to ensure sustainability.

What NOAH does?

Arks provide the following services

  • Nutrition programmes
  • Bereavement counselling
  • Home visits
  • After care and/or day care
  • Community food gardens
  • Grant applications, birth certificates and referrals to government agencies
  • Child Protection Initiatives

What is an ark?

Arks comprise 2 elements: Community leadership and trained volunteers providing services to vulnerable children.

NOAH’S support

Noah has and continues to initiate collaboration with other like-minded organisations, donor companies and Government Departments. It is our belief that the challenge facing our country cannot be overcome by one organisation or government department alone. Noah therefore actively co-operates and partners, with government departments, corporate entities, foundations and NGOs to deliver services to children made vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
